Must Fest
Bumbershoot

The city’s best summer fest is back, featuring stellar big names (Elvis Costello! Mavis Staples! The Afghan Whigs!), killer local bands (The Head and the Heart! Pickwick! La Luz!) and cool “words and ideas,” from The Failure Variety Show (artists celebrating major fails) to Stephin Merritt (of the Magnetic Fields) talking to arts editor Brangien Davis about Scrabble tactics.

Must Cheer
Kick off Seahawks Season with an NFL Fun Run

Monday (9/1, 7:30 a.m.) — Celebrate our Super Bowl champions with this 5K NFL Kickoff Run, which starts outside CenturyLink Field on Occidental Avenue, winds down First Avenue South, then finishes on the sidelines at CenturyLink Field.

Must See
SAM Displays Contemporary Art from India

(8/30 to 2/15/15, times vary) — From the collection of ex-Microsoftie Sanjay Parthasarathy and wife Malini Balakrishnan comes a fresh perspective on today’s India, seen in photographs and sculptures by contemporary Indian artists, such as the hyperrealist, wildly hued photos by Nandini Valli Muthiah.

Must Set Sail
Historic Tall Ships Come to Kirkland

(8/30 to 9/2, 2 p.m.) — Set sail aboard one of several mighty vessels and experience the booming cannons, close-quarters maneuvers and a taste of 18th century maritime life. This three-hour adventure invites passengers to raise the sails, taunt opponents and sing a sea shanty.

Must Make
Grilled Corn with Tomato Butter

Enjoy the last few days of summer with this grilled take on a warm-weather favorite, courtesy of local chef, author, urban gardener and Seattle magazine contributor Amy Pennington.

Seattle's Drag Brunch Has History

Seattle’s Drag Brunch Has History

The city’s Sunday shows started long before the mimosas got bottomless.

There was a time not too long ago, when drag performances—now a mainstay of Seattle’s queer scene—were kept under wraps. And when brunches, complete with singing and dancing queens dressed in dazzling drag as you sipped mimosas, weren’t a Sunday staple.  During the 1940s and ‘50s, an era largely shaped by restrictive laws and bias…

Rearview Mirror: A Georgian Dinner, Sidewalk Sips, and One-of-a-Kind Clothing

Things I did, saw, ate, learned, or read in the past week (or so).

A new life for old clothes To celebrate one year in its current studio, the FXRY—a clothing repair service available via in-person appointments, home pickup, or mail-in drop off—is dropping its first collection. A small batch of reworked pieces, Second Mark will feature 13 vintage barn jackets, cropped, chain-stitched, and renewed into a completely unique, one-of-one…
