Three cheers for the M’s! Our Seattle Mariners were victorious yesterday against the Los Angeles Angels, beating them 4-1 in front of a sellout crowd at Safeco. The Seattle PI captured photos galore of the Opening Day festivities. See them all here. Next game in the series is tonight at 7:10 p.m.

It’s official: Japanese fast-fashion retailer Uniqlo will open a store here…in Bellevue. Fans of the popular chain can expect the 13,000-square-foot shop to start selling its stylish basics at Bellevue Square this fall. The retailer’s location had been a source of much speculation over the last few years, with some hoping it would land in downtown Seattle. That’s not out of the question, however. The Puget Sound Business Journal notes, “the company could eventually open two stores, one on either side of the lake.” Wouldn’t that be grand.

Sleeping on planes is a skill that I’ve somewhat mastered. But then again, I easily fall asleep in any moving vehicle, whether it’s by land, sea or air. For some, it’s not that simple. Geekwire reports that Boeing has patented what it’s calling “cuddle chairs,” a new comfort sleep system that’s supposed to help the problem of falling asleep in awkward positions while you’re enjoying the friendly skies. Geekwire writes: “The system involves a backpack that extends from under the seat, which passengers can attach to the back of their seat, then rest their face and chest on.” Interesting. But putting your face on something that others have also put their faces on? Hmmm.

Interested on going on a first date? And being filmed while doing so? NBC has ordered 8 episodes of First Dates, an observational documentary series from producer Ellen DeGeneres that announced it’s casting in Seattle. The call is open to people ages 18-65+ (either straight or LGBT) who are single and looking to meet someone new. Go here to fill out the questionnaire and apply. First Dates is an hour-long program based on a popular U.K. format, in which the audience will get a glimpse of a variety of real first dates happening all in one night at the same restaurant. According to the press release: “The audience will be along for the full ride in a relatable viewing experience that plays like a real romantic comedy. Viewers will judge for themselves about how the couple is interacting and whether they are a good fit for one another. Is there a palpable sense of chemistry? Will there be an ever-elusive second date, or will it be back to love’s drawing board?” Filming is set for July in Chicago and anyone cast will have travel and hotel expenses paid, as well as receive a day rate.

Kim Fu’s latest novel turns a rain-soaked Pacific Northwest winter into the backdrop for a story about grief and loneliness.

In their latest novel, Seattle-based author Kim Fu gets one thing right about the Pacific Northwest: the rain. Set during a particularly bleak winter, The Valley of Vengeful Ghosts tells the story of Eleanor Fan, an online therapist grappling with the recent loss of her mother, Lele. After Lele’s passing, Eleanor inherits money to put…

With a mix of mediums, ojo|-|ólǫ́ examines questions surrounding the authenticity and ownership of Indigenous work.

It’s a phrase that’s been drilled into most of us since we were young children: When you’re visiting a gallery, please, do not touch the art. In many cases, it’s with good reason: the pieces on display are fragile, one-of-a-kind, or historic works that cannot be reproduced. It’s such an ingrained approach to the museum-going…

Things I did, saw, ate, learned, or read in the past week (or so).

Circular Thinking I am very lucky to live just a 12-minute walk away from Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park. It’s a regular destination for my weekly walks and, aside from the world-class art, has one of the city’s best views of Puget Sound. Earlier this week, I went on a wet, windy walk and discovered…
