It was disappointing to learn that potential plans to redevelop a slice of Belltown along Second Avenue could spell disaster for popular jazz club Tula’s as well as the nearby Shorty’s and Rocco’s. The Puget Sound Business Journal reported yesterday that plans were filed with Seattle’s Department of Planning and Development to demolish the existing buildings in order to erect yet another apartment building with room for street-level retail. KING 5 News spoke with Tula’s general manager Jason Moore and learned that while he knew the building was for sale “he was still surprised when he read the [PSBJ] article announcing plans to tear it down.” Hopefully, all three businesses can find new homes if the development and demolition happens accordingly.

Should we rename Mount Rainier? After Alaska’s tallest peak–formerly called Mount McKinley–was officially changed to Denali, the Athabascan word meaning “the high one,” a Seattle Times editorial wonders if we should consider changing up our majestic mountain’s moniker to Tahoma. “Unlike McKinley,” the editorial claims, “changing Rainier’s name hasn’t generated a passionate groundswell, and some argue that ‘Tahoma’ is only one of several authentic native names. The first step is to begin the conversation.” What do you think?

Bumbershoot, the annual Labor Day weekend music festival, is almost here. What’s your strategy for the fest? Seattle Weekly notes that “it’s a pivotal year for the festival, with a new partnership that will include longtime steward OneReel and the regional arm of international live-music monolith AEG Live.” Thus, the paper has taken an “all-local view of the extravaganza” with this Seattle-centric guide.

With a mix of mediums, ojo|-|ólǫ́ examines questions surrounding the authenticity and ownership of Indigenous work.

It’s a phrase that’s been drilled into most of us since we were young children: When you’re visiting a gallery, please, do not touch the art. In many cases, it’s with good reason: the pieces on display are fragile, one-of-a-kind, or historic works that cannot be reproduced. It’s such an ingrained approach to the museum-going…

Things I did, saw, ate, learned, or read in the past week (or so).

Circular Thinking I am very lucky to live just a 12-minute walk away from Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park. It’s a regular destination for my weekly walks and, aside from the world-class art, has one of the city’s best views of Puget Sound. Earlier this week, I went on a wet, windy walk and discovered…
