Here’s what was served up recently in the Emerald City

Have you heard about the Seattle pizza chain taking its crust across the country? Following a deal with Kroger, Tutta Bella’s SODO facility has turned up the heat, producing more than 10,000 Neapolitan-style pies, pastas, and fresh salads a day to ship to 1,200 stores in 40 states. Go ahead, take another slice of Seattle food news. We won’t judge.

Luxury Spanish cuisine? Howl about that?

This week, La Loba (translated to “she wolf”) opened inside the 1 Hotel in South Lake Union — the latest project from celebrated chef and Barcelona-native Oscar Amador. The swanky, nature-infused space blends the spirits of Seattle with the Catalonia capital, serving up small plates (but not tapas) that showcase the freshest ingredients, sourced almost entirely within 100 miles. Expect gin and tonics, regional wines, and an evident dedication to sustainability from the kitchen.

Copperworks Distilling’s new farm-to-table concept shines

It’s called De La Soil and will debut inside the Kenmore tasting room on Monday, May 12. Chefs Cody and Andrea Westerfield built the restaurant “from the ground up” as a private pop-up events company in 2018. Now, with their own permanent kitchen, they’re excited to share food that evolves with the seasons and brings people together. Guests will order dishes such as spring lamb meatballs and bone-in Idaho trout from the counter.

Hit the farm-to-table trails

Appetite? Check. Curiosity about the local food system and economy? Double check. Looks like you’re ready to hit Farm to Table Trails, eight experiential itineraries that explore food and farm businesses throughout Whatcom and Skagit counties. The initiative from Sustainable Connections is designed to showcase u-pick berry farms, cheese producers, bakeries, wineries, and markets selling the best vegetables, fruit, meat, and fish of Northwest Washington. Maps are available in digital and print forms — happy eating!

Local brews bring home awards

At this year’s World Beer Cup, Washington breweries were well-represented winners. In total, 24 beers from 21 different outfits medaled, with seven of those coming in the golden variety. Resonate Brewery in Bellevue took home the top “German-Style Altbier” spot with Lithium; Seattle’s Cloudburst Brewing triumphed in “Strong Red Ale” with Peaked in High School.

Don’t have FOMO for SBW

Wait, don’t put your glass down yet — it’s time to say cheers to the start of Seattle Beer Week, which runs May 9-17. This celebration of suds is a choose-your-own adventure, with 50 events from tap takeovers to themed movie nights and yoga classes all across the city. It’s also about community, and this year’s festival will honor co-founder Matt Younts, who passed away late last year, and his love of cats with special cans and T-shirts.

Fusion food has an innate ability to bring us together. In the blending of two (or sometimes more) cultures, new perspectives are unlocked and we are all better for it. Esquire is in agreement, as the magazine has selected Lupe’s Situ Tacos, a Mexican-Lebanese taqueria in Ballard, as one of the 33 best new restaurants…

Counter Culture: Sansonina Ristorante Italiano

An Italian escape hiding in Renton.

Tucked just off Rainier Avenue, across from a Safeway, Sansonina Ristorante Italiano—which opened early in 2019—is the kind of place you drive past for years without noticing until you walk through the door. Once inside, the outside world dissolves, the hum of traffic fades, and suddenly you’re not in Renton anymore. You’re in a dimly…

5 Things to Eat in December

This month’s assignment: Take the pressure off.

There’s something about the end of the year that adds pressure to everything we do. Despite all the talk of holiday cheer and “merry and bright,” heightened expectations can bring a sense of weariness. We’re fretting over feasts and gatherings while working fervently to tie up loose ends—gifts, work, everything—with a pretty bow. Each month,…

How a tech-minded home cook turned years of tinkering into a chef’s knife powered by 40,000 vibrations per second.

Scott Heimendinger traces his love for knives back to college, when his dad taught him how to cook over the phone. By his junior year he had saved for his first real knife, a JA Henckels Santoku. Compared with the $9 IKEA knife he had been using, “it felt like a laser… things that used…
