Restaurant Roundup: Blindfolded Bites, Rooftop Tacos, and Shipping Container Farming

Seattle’s food scene is heating up with the weather

Some would say Seattle’s food scene is at its best when the impact stretches beyond the immediate benefits of nourishment and taste.

That’s certainly the case at Cherry Street Farm, where Hip Hop is Green founder Keith Tuckets uses a shipping container hydroponic farm to help feed Seattle families, with future plans to educate kids about climate justice, sustainability, and vegan cooking. Currently, a community kitchen is under construction and eventually, the space will host live music and other teaching opportunities.

Close your eyes and chew

Have you seen — wait, let’s rephrase that — have you heard about the “Dining in the Dark” experience? Held once a month at The Collective, the event invites guests to enjoy a meal, sans sight, offering them opportunity to lean on their other senses and embrace a sense of mystery. There are three dietary options (meat, seafood, or vegetarian) and three courses during dinner, but that’s about as many details as you’ll have heading into it. The next available dates are May 23 and June 20.

Ovens working overtime

Pizza is so hot right now, that even bakeries want an invite to the party. And deservedly so when you see the Roman-style pizza at Sacro Bosco, a new evening eatery set to open in Temple Bakery on May 30. Coming thicker and more rectangular than your typical New York-style slice, these pies will serve recognizable flavors (like vodka sauce and basil) alongside olive oil cake, tiramisu, and Italian wines and aperitivos.

Happy tears in H Mart

If you shop at the popular Asian grocery chain and live in Ballard — this one’s for you. On June 5, Seattle’s fourth H Mart store will open at 951 N.W. Ballard Way, providing patrons the chance to browse the 25,000-square-foot space for harder-to-find fresh produce such as jackfruit, more instant ramen options than you could ever imagine, and more. If you work up an appetite, the deli will offer bulgogi, banchans, and other staple Korean dishes to-go.

Up top and under the sun

In search of sunshine and drinks to sip with it, look no further than Capitol Hill’s latest rooftop bar, Cantina Del Sol, one of four ventures from restaurateur Travis Rosenthal in the former Mezcaleria Oaxaca. It opened on Wednesday, slinging micheladas and margaritas in a setting “steeped in creative energy,” with tacos on deck thanks to the on-site food truck (that also happens to be on the roof). Additional plans for another bar and non-Mexican restaurant are in place for summer and early fall.
