Finally, for longtime catalog and online fans, and those waiting for the “under construction” plywood to fall at University Village, Room & Board (University Village; 206.336.4676; roomandboard.com) has opened its doors here. It’s the first Pacific Northwest location for the Minnesota-based purveyor of classic contemporary furnishings, and it waited to take over a big spot (Barnes & Noble’s former space), giving it 27,000 square feet in which to show off its American-made wares. You’ll find stylish pieces aplenty for sitting (the clean-lined Odin Sofa, $4,298, shown above, is a plush pleasure), sleeping and eating on (the Chilton Table, $2,499, is a standout piece of natural walnut hand-welded to a steel base). The store is also well stocked with goods for bedroom, office and outdoors, as well as lighting, art and accessories (we like the fall season’s new Galbraith & Paul pendants, $279, and Tivoli radio, $350). And if Room & Board doesn’t have quite what you’re looking for, custom options seem to cover every category imaginable.

One thing is almost certain: You’re unlikely to be bored at Room & Board.

It’s an experience he always hoped his children would have someday, but by the time he became a father in Seattle, land was at a premium: either already developed or prohibitively…

Craft Value: The Founder of Henrybuilt Reflects on What He’s Learned in 25 Years of Business

In 2001, after 15 years of working in publishing—where I was a founding team member of two venture-funded technology companies—I decided to start a different kind of company: one that made physical products. This company, Henrybuilt, would combine product innovation and craft under one roof and sell directly to the end user—the homeowner—so that we…

After more than a decade as the executive director of  local lighting company Graypants, one of the cofounders, Jonathan Junker, decided to return to his architectural roots. In 2019, he was raising a family on Bainbridge Island when he opened his namesake studio. At first, Junker enjoyed the holistic approach to residential design; a few…
