A Greenwood shop sheds light on how to enhance natural illumination

At least two of Seattle’s seasons are dim and dark—our latitude doesn’t provide much light in autumn and winter. But Kristine Kyle, owner of Greenwood shop Luxe Lighting Company, which opened in 2011, has some tips to help change your view.
For outdoors, Kyle recommends augmenting natural light with lamps to mimic that natural light. “Add some dramatic exterior lighting,” she says. For example, light a tree from below so the branches are illuminated, or put a spotlight on an outdoor feature, such as a brick or rock wall. For indoors, she suggests moving window treatments to the outside of the window frame to maximize light intake, and to add sconces and tall lamps that spread light upward. “When you light the ceiling, you light the room,” she explains. “Natural light comes from above, so when you light your ceiling, it feels natural.”
