Must Go East
Kirkland Arts Center’s Inflorescence

Opens 9/20 — Roughly based around the concept of a cluster of flowers growing from a single stem (“inflorescence”), this group show features three Washington artists (Jean Bradbury, Lisa Conway and Patty Haller), each working from her own aesthetic but within a common theme of the plant world.

Must Drink
Best Beer Gardens in Seattle

It’s going to be a gloriously warm weekend. Herewith, the 17 best local patios, decks, repurposed parking lots and other open-air beer-drinking spots for soaking up the last days of summer.

Must Experience
Love at Magnuson Park

Friday (9/19, 8 p.m.) — Boy meets girl, but boy also meets boy…then boy meets more boys and girls, and the highs and lows of love, lust and loss ensue. Tony-nominated choreographer Donald Byrd is back with a remount of his piece Love, this time at the newly renovated Hangar at Magnuson Park (Building 30). This piece may not be the final word on love, but it provokes a careful meditation on that theme.

Must Robot
Robothon Comes to the Seattle Center

Saturday (9/20, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) — Robot enthusiasts convene at this gratis event to witness technological advances, show off their mechanical creations and share ideas.

Must Celebrate
Fremont’s Luminata Lantern Parade Honors the Autumnal Equinox

Sunday (9/21, dusk) — Head to Green Lake Park around 7 p.m. for the Fremont Arts Council’s Luminata Lantern Parade, which celebrates the changing of the seasons. Feeling crafty? Make your own lantern for the festivities or purchase one there.

Seattle's Drag Brunch Has History

Seattle’s Drag Brunch Has History

The city’s Sunday shows started long before the mimosas got bottomless.

There was a time not too long ago, when drag performances—now a mainstay of Seattle’s queer scene—were kept under wraps. And when brunches, complete with singing and dancing queens dressed in dazzling drag as you sipped mimosas, weren’t a Sunday staple.  During the 1940s and ‘50s, an era largely shaped by restrictive laws and bias…
