If you thought getting a table for before- or after-noon pancakes and mimosas was difficult before, hold on to your orange juice—the great brunch crunch is coming. We kid, but Mother’s Day is just over a week out, and sometimes to make Mom feel special, putting in the time to wait in line is the least we can do. It doesn’t hurt to do some research beforehand because she deserves the bestGeraldine’s Counter offers a nostalgic diner experience, Champagne flows at The Coupe & Flute, and Mioposto Pizzeria cracks the shell of convention by putting sunny-side-up eggs on its pies.

Read on for more Seattle food stories so you’ll have plenty to talk about.

Look how far you can see

The 13th floor of the Level Hotel in South Lake Union will debut one of the city’s largest rooftop restaurants this summer, offering views of the Space Needle and Puget Sound to go alongside an upscale-casual dining experience. Featuring 225 seats across 6,500 square feet, Solette will serve American fare like burgers and steaks, as well as pasta, sushi, and salad under the guidance of Executive Chef Pierre Tumlin (formerly of The Lodge at St. Edward Park and Zen, both located in Kenmore). Guests and the general public are welcome.

A new candy king

Only a week after announcing its first new flavor in more than 50 years, Brown & Haley, the historic Tacoma-based candymaker behind the Almond Roca, has even bigger news. The company has merged with BHM Group Ltd., its Chinese import and distribution partner—nearly half of Brown & Haley’s products go to the East Asian country. Sam Meng will step in as the new CEO; despite the executive shakeup, newly appointed COO Kathi Rennaker assured The Seattle Times that operations will remain local.

Food that is delicious, plant-based in my bowl

Sing that to the tune of “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder—a superstar who not only influenced the global music scene, but also Seattle’s vegan cuisine in a roundabout way through Makini Powell. The local chef toured with the musician from 2014 to 2015, earning her plant-based chops by preparing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks for him. That experience spurred her career, which has culminated in several cookbooks, influential restaurants like the recently closed Plum Bistro, and her own tofu company Makini’s. Want to know what she made to help Wonder hit the high notes? French toast and tofu bacon were particular favorites.

Cold cuts, coming soon

The salami-sized hole left in Pike Place Market when Michou Deli closed will be filled by Friends of Carmela, a family-owned spot serving breakfast sandwiches and Italian-American standards, as well as coffee to set the stage for sweets like tiramisu, brownies, and banana bread. Service will also include a happy hour starting at 5:30 p.m. No official opening date has been set.

Honk honk

Flavors from far across the Pacific Ocean are creating a unique fusion in the coffee served at Orange Goose Coffee. The Hawaiian- and Korean-inspired cafe broke new ground in the space as a pop-up last April, wowing customers by mixing espresso with clarified pineapple juice and coconut cream, as well as finely grated ube. Now in a more permanent home in Queen Anne, owner Polu Arsiga continues to push the boundaries of how we think about our daily cup of joe. A photographer’s look at the small Lummi Island fleet taking part in a long-standing fishing tradition.

While driving across the country from Detroit to San Francisco in October 2024, I stopped on Lummi Island, about 10 miles west of Bellingham, to visit my friend Peter. I had met Peter while traveling with Bread & Puppet Theater, photographing its national tour.  He thought I might be interested in documenting the fishing there,…

Magical Mollusks

Magical Mollusks

Oysters are one the Northwest’s favorite harvests. The hardworking farmers behind this bounty share a deep appreciation for its source and a personal connection to the processes that yield our food.

It’s hard to describe people who are undeniably connected to the land—often, it’s about a feeling they transmit. Grounded, knowledgeable about their work, and passionate in their care for nature’s resources. Oyster farmers along Hood Canal, like Matthew Macias, give off a certain vibe, as though they have some secret to life that I don’t…
