Five Ways to Summer

How to soak up the last of the season before fall rolls in

Don’t even think about autumn yet. Summer’s still here, and we should be enjoying every last warm day. I’ve been savoring the simple pleasures of the season, trying to make the most of it before the weather shifts. Here are five things I’m loving right now, and I hope they’ll inspire you to do the same before we trade in shorts for sweaters.

Swim outside

I recently took my kids to Yost Pool in Edmonds, and it was so fun. Coming from California, swimming in an outdoor pool was my thing every single summer. I know that up here in the Pacific Northwest, pools aren’t exactly on every corner, but we’ve got a few. Mounger Pool in Magnolia is one—it has a corkscrew slide. There’s also Coleman Pool in West Seattle, and there are a few lake spots that feel like a public pool, like Madison Park and West Green Lake Beach. If you haven’t already, get outside for a dip before the sun goes away.

Polka dots are in

This classic pattern is more popular than you might think. If you stop and look around, you’re sure to notice it on dresses, shirts, hats, and even bags. I love how the spots and speckles add a little fun to any outfit, and polka dots pair with almost everything. The size and spacing of the dots can change the whole look—big dots feel bold and playful, while smaller ones look softer and more subtle. If you’re looking for something fresh and summery, why not give dots try?

Eat outside

Have you had a food truck meal lately? My daughter and I stumbled upon Georgia’s Greek Food Truck in Shoreline after a neighborhood walk—right in front of Ridgecrest Public House—and it was the best surprise. There’s something so special about ordering at the window, then grabbing a seat at a picnic table or a park bench to enjoy your meal while the sun’s still out. It’s such a simple joy of summer.

Podcast walk

I finally got around to listening to Amy Poehler’s podcast Good Hang. It’s hilarious. I made myself commit to a walk while I listened, and the time flew by. I especially loved the episodes with Jack Black and Paul Rudd. If you’re looking for something light and easy to listen to while moving your body in this perfect weather, this one’s a great choice. For something a little more local, Your Last Meal with Rachel Belle has become a favorite of mine. Perfect for a summertime stroll.

Go see some flowers

The other day, I needed a break from the chaos of home and went to work on my laptop at the Edmonds Waterfront Center. It was quiet in the morning, but by noon, the caterers showed up, and a huge group of seniors started filling the space. They were heading to Flower World in Snohomish after lunch to see the flowers. Many of them told me they weren’t even planning to buy anything—just appreciating flowers was enough. It sounded like such an easy summer outing. For a more local escape, Swansons Nursery and Sky Nursery are both great options.

So, what have you been up to this summer?
