The Pulse: Soggy and Saucy

Rain, rumors, and rental chickens — just another week in Seattle

By Sarah Stackhouse February 21, 2025

A person clutching an umbrella braves the soggy streets at night, navigating a city alive with lighted storefronts and illuminated streetlights, feeling the pulse of urban life.

The forecast? Rain, rain, and more rain. My husband is recovering from Covid, so we’ll be doing puzzles and keeping cozy this weekend. What about you?

Here’s what’s been going on around town…

MoPOP is honoring Black sci-fi legends, and yes, you can see Geordi La Forge’s VISOR in-person. I’m not crying, you are.

Could Real Housewives be coming to Seattle? The gossip is heating up!

Kiesha Garrison, the founder of Hey, Black Seattle! is everywhere — Microsoft, comedy, community organizing. Wow.

Washington just passed major parking reform.

Seattle is officially the best city for introverts

Seeing mesh tops everywhere — I love this black, lacey number.

This week Mayor Harrell gave his State of the City speech. Seattle’s on the rise, but there are concerns.

The Fifty Shades of Grey penthouse is for sale. If you’ve ever dreamed of living in a cultural phenomenon — or at least a high-rise with saucy lighting — now’s your chance.

The new Frye Museum exhibit opening this weekend looks ridiculously pretty. I love the way motion is being captured with paint.

Jonathan Richman is coming to Seattle for a few days this June. He lived in my hometown, and when I was a teen working at a movie theater, he’d go into a movie, then come out asking us to turn the volume down. We always laughed — it was endearing. Big fan of his music.

KUOW’s Tom Robbins pen pal story is too good.

If you’ve ever wanted to rent a chicken, you can!

Washington schools are holding firm on DEI programs despite national pushback — love to see it.

This performance is stirring.

KYAC was more than a Black-owned radio station — it was a home for Seattle’s soul.

And if all else fails, there’s always bibimbap.

Reader Comment of the Week:

“I love every time I see people who are doing good things elevated. Every single one of the spaces Yasu has his hands in is a damn Seattle gem. Couldn’t love ‘em more.” — @thealexandrak

Same. We love highlighting people making Seattle better. Read our Most Influential profile on Yasuaki Saito here.

As we head into another summer of hotter days, drought, stress on waterways and habitat, and the now-familiar arrival of wildfire smoke, the First Peoples Climate Fund puts city and philanthropic money behind Native communities already doing the work of responding to these pressures, many of them closest to the impacts and with long-held knowledge…

More Than a Watch Party

More Than a Watch Party

At the Museum of Flight, Seattle celebrated Artemis II with real ties to the mission.

A moon mission lifted off in Florida on Wednesday, but one of the most interesting places to see it was Seattle. On April 1, the Museum of Flight hosted a free public watch party for Artemis II, NASA’s first crewed mission around the moon in more than 50 years. The event included a live broadcast,…
