Ongoing (thru 4/21) — Apartheid, class issues and ballroom dancing blend in South African playwright Athol Fugard’s acclaimed Broadway drama. Longtime local theater fans will be thrilled to learn that this contemporary take is directed by Burke Walker, founding artistic director of the dearly departed Empty Space Theatre, and stars another Seattle theater vet, G. Valmont Thomas, whose performance is so good, he may just break your heart.

Bloedel Reserve’s Premier Plant Sale
Starts Saturday (4/6–4/7) — Garden gurus must ferry over to Bainbridge Island for the Bloedel Reserve’s annual plant sale, where you can attend expert gardening and botany lectures, purchase rare and native plants to import into your own garden and, best of all, wander the grounds and marvel at the lush and varied habitats that make this such a unique sanctuary.

Edible Book Festival
Sunday (4/7) — We always look forward to this friendly battle of wit and wordplay. Every year, participants bake, cook and sculpt “edible” creations representing clever spin-offs of literary titles. Previous entries include “Anne of Green Bagels,” “Challah-ver Twist” and “Chronicles of Naania” (get it?). After you’ve chuckled (or cringed) at all the entries, stick around to see who wins Best in Show and perhaps even taste your favorite. (Warning: not all entries are intended for consumption.)

Mariner’s Home Opener
Monday (4/8) — Root, root, root for the home team as the Mariners return to Safeco Field next week for the season’s home opener. The game will surely come into clearer focus with the debut of SafeCo’s gigantic new scoreboard video screen, boasted to be the biggest in Major League Baseball.
