Celebrating the Life of Rock Legend David Bowie
Where to say farewell to the music genius
It’s almost impossible to believe that this week, just days after his 69th birthday and the release of his latest album, Blackstar, rock legend David Bowie passed away after an 18-month battle with cancer.
He had an incomparable sound, androgynous face and an inherent sense of cool. His ability to successfully and constantly reinvent himself for his art made him a pop icon who was relevent and influential in the music world for more than four decades.
With a real understanding of showmanship and the deeply positive impression he left on so many people across the world, he is a legend that won’t be forgotten.
Sure, you’ve been playing your favorite Bowie songs all week, but if you want to celebrate the life of David Bowie with other broken-hearted fans, memorial events all over the city invite you to pay homage to the beloved British rock star.
1. KEXP Bowie Stream
Prior to Bowie’s death, KEXP DJ’s dedicated an entire day of programming to his music to celebrate his birthday and Blackstar release. The archived show is available for you to listen to over and over on the KEXP website.
2. Bowie Night at Nuemos
Nuemos and KEXP come together to present Bowie Night — A Tribute to the Life & Art of David Bowie, on Thursday, March 3, with performances by The Maldives, Vox Mod, Prom Queen, The Spider Ferns, Black Whales, Star Anna and The Gods Themselves. The show starts at 8 p.m. and a portion of the $10 ticket price (on sale now) will benefit MusiCares clients who have been affected by cancer. You must be 21 and lightning bolt face paint is encouraged.
3. Labryinth at EMP’s Campout Cinema
The Experience Music Project Museum will screen Bowie’s epic 1986 adventure/fantasy film Labryinth on Friday, January 15, at 7:30 p.m. You must be 21 to attend, but the screening is free if you RSVP and tickets include admission to Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic and Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction.
4. Victrola Coffee Bowie Memorial
This Friday, Victrola Coffee (the 15th Avenue E location) is holding a Memorial to David Bowie featuring local musicians Satori and Jack, School of Rock, and more. Admission is free and all ages are invited to come together and celebrate Bowie’s life with acoustic guitar and piano from 7 until about 8:30 p.m. Come ready to sing and cry.
5. School of Rock performs David Bowie
On Saturday, January 23, rock ‘n’ roll music school School of Rock West Seattle will perform the Best of Bowie at Chop Suey. Tickets are discounted if purchased in advance and all ages are welcome.
