Go ahead, watch the video below. I’ll personally pay you $5 if you don’t get the chills. I’ll wait.

Okay, now that that’s settled, let me give you some details about what’s going on: On October 1, local immigrant and refugee youth from the Rainier Vista neighborhood of South Seattle are coming together to throw a block party to bolster the community and show unity is not just a word located in the dictionary.

A press release for the event states, “Named, ‘Beautify the Block,’ the youth-led showcase will highlight local talent, community members, nonprofit orgs and business vendors with the intention to bridge the gap between neighbors and community based organizations, as well as demonstrate youth talent.”

The event will feature The G.O.O.D. (Girls Out here Opening Doors) Girls and B.A.D. (Build and Develop) Boyz, the lovely kids in the video above.

The “Beautify the Block” community block party will be held on Thursday, October 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Rainier Vista Central Park. Local acts such as Raz Simone, Nikkita Oliver and Jamil Suleman will perform, as well as neighborhood youth, with appearances by local District 2 candidates Bruce Harrell and Tammy Morales. For more information, contact Yasmin Habib of the World Mind Creation Academy.

Check it out, people!

Seattle's Drag Brunch Has History

Seattle’s Drag Brunch Has History

The city’s Sunday shows started long before the mimosas got bottomless.

There was a time not too long ago, when drag performances—now a mainstay of Seattle’s queer scene—were kept under wraps. And when brunches, complete with singing and dancing queens dressed in dazzling drag as you sipped mimosas, weren’t a Sunday staple.  During the 1940s and ‘50s, an era largely shaped by restrictive laws and bias…
