Must Cool Down
Symphony Performs Live Score to March of the Penguins

Wednesday (7/8, 7:30 p.m.) Flee the heat for cooler climes—at least as depicted in the movies. The Seattle Symphony will perform the original score from the documentary March of the Penguins while those precious flightless birds frolic on screen. Bonus: Leading the musicians is none other than Hollywood music director Jeffrey Schindler, who originally conducted the score for the film.

Must Be Free
Freedom Fantasia at the Triple Door

(Through 7/3, times vary) Indulge in this cavalcade of glitter-encrusted patriotism, featuring local burlesque stars Cherdonna Shinatra, BenDeLaCreme and Kitten LaRue, all of whom let freedom ring to the beat of their own divine drummers.

Must Ooh and Ahh
Celebrate America at Seafair Summer Fourth

Saturday (7/4, Noon to 11 p.m.) Trek to Gas Works Park or South Lake Union Park (3 p.m. to 11 p.m.) and secure a prime fireworks-watching spot for the evening. While you wait, live it up in the parks with a little all-American barbecue and corn on the cob, beer garden and the Ezell’s Famous Chicken food truck (only at Gas Works).

Must Drink Outside
4 Great Seattle Bars for Outdoor Summer Cocktailing

Your summertime cocktail imbibing should begin in earnest (if it hasn’t already). Luckily, we have a number of swell bars that are prepared for the sunnier days, when you might want to nurse a cold one in the shade.

Must Go East
Lace Up for a Patriotic Walk with Your Pooch

Saturday (7/4, 9 a.m.) The third annual Bellevue Four on the 4th Dog Jog & Walk includes a non-competitive 4K course for you and your patriotic pups and a ton of family/pet-friendly activities. The fun begins on Saturday morning at Ashwood Park in downtown Bellevue. People and puppies both: hydrate!

Seattle's Drag Brunch Has History

Seattle’s Drag Brunch Has History

The city’s Sunday shows started long before the mimosas got bottomless.

There was a time not too long ago, when drag performances—now a mainstay of Seattle’s queer scene—were kept under wraps. And when brunches, complete with singing and dancing queens dressed in dazzling drag as you sipped mimosas, weren’t a Sunday staple.  During the 1940s and ‘50s, an era largely shaped by restrictive laws and bias…
