Dynamic DIY duo, Cathy and Garrett Poshusta, the brains/brawn behind The Grit and Polish, are quickly gaining ground in the design world. The Seattle-based husband and wife team are known for their practical yet stunning home renovations and savvy business sense, “house-hacking” their way to financial freedom by renovating and renting homes in a tight real estate market. With a new Ellensburg farmhouse reno in the works, which the family of five plans to make their forever home, and a pilot episode for a new show set to air this fall on HGTV, there’s no slowing these DIYers down.

When they’re not busy with their three young children, tackling another corner of their dream home, or managing a host of renovated rental properties, they’re taking on new projects transforming outdated spaces in old homes. A recent partnership with Metrie resulted in an edgy revamp of a previously neglected space in a converted garage. After demo-ing, framing, drywalling and polishing the concrete floors, the couple was ready to add some individuality to the new nook.

Using Metrie’s Option {M}™ Vintage Industrial line, the couple trimmed out an accent wall with sleek panel and baseboard moulding for added depth and dimension.

Cathy explains, “To achieve this look, we selected 1 1/2″ Primed FJ Poplar Panel Mould and 6″ MDF Baseboard from Metrie’s Option {M} Vintage Industrial Line. As first time Metrie customers, we loved how easy it was to pick out these profiles from the curated Option {M} lines. Within each style, all of the profiles are designer matched so it takes out the guesswork. The Vintage Industrial line is all about clean-lines and sharp angles to create a contemporary look – just what we were going for.”

To warm up the urban-chic space and complement the vintage industrial moulding, an antique Moroccan rug adds a pop of color, while a vintage wood table and dresser add natural texture. With a cool mix of layered art and floor-length curtains, the space was more than ready for entertaining.

Craft Value: The Founder of Henrybuilt Reflects on What He’s Learned in 25 Years of Business

In 2001, after 15 years of working in publishing—where I was a founding team member of two venture-funded technology companies—I decided to start a different kind of company: one that made physical products. This company, Henrybuilt, would combine product innovation and craft under one roof and sell directly to the end user—the homeowner—so that we…
