MUST SEE
Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows
Ongoing (closes 3/28 ) — The story is nothing short of incredible. A nanny who lived in New York City and Chicago, Vivian Maier was also a devoted shutterbug who took captivating street shots of everyday people—amounting to a roll of film a day from the 1950s through the ’70s. But she kept her hobby private, piling up more than 100,000 negatives in storage units, which went undiscovered until 2007. Her incisive eye is remarkable, and her story is an ode to art for art’s sake.
Ongoing through 3/28. Times vary. Photo Center Northwest, 900 12th Ave.; 206.720.7222; pcnw.org

MUST HEAR
Michael Moss: Salt, Sugar, Fat
Friday (3/15) — Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Michael Moss was the first to blow the lid off the “pink slime” controversy. Now he’s calling out the convenience food industry for consciously getting Americans hooked on three unhealthy ingredients that make up the title of his new book: Salt, Sugar, Fat. At Town Hall, in conversation with Grist’s Chip Giller, he’ll discuss some of the shocking tactics food companies use to keep us hooked—and suggest strategies for how to stop them. Don’t go expecting a guilt trip about your diet. Moss recently admitted that, as a working parent, he resorts to convenience food too.
3/15. 7:30 p.m. $5. Downstairs at Town Hall (enter on Seneca Street); 888.377.4510 townhallseattle.org

MUST TASTE
Mountain Sandwich from Delicatus
Food and dining editor Allison Austin Scheff braises her own corned beef every year for St. Patrick’s Day. If that sounds like too much work (it does to us!), she also recommends the aptly named Mountain Sandwich from Delicatus, piled high with corned beef.

MUST MARVEL
AIA/Northwest Home Tour
Sunday (3/17) — If you love to drool over masterful home remodels, learn about high-tech eco-friendly updates or just appreciate historical preservation in architecture, you’ll love the bimonthly AIA/Northwest Home tours. This weekend’s installment invites visitors inside a West Seattle home designed by Stephen Bobbitt Architects, who found a way to preserve the structure’s mid-century modern frame, while pretty much overhauling the interior from the ground up. See before and after pictures at nwhomemag.com.
3/17. Noon-3 p.m. Free. West Seattle, 9105 Fauntleroy Way SW. For more information on the tour program, visit aiaseattle.org or call 206.448.4938.

Photo Essay: Ferry Therapy

Photo Essay: Ferry Therapy

Words and photographs by Anna Starr.

Riding the ferry is my favorite Seattle pastime. At any given time on a Washington State Ferry you will find a group of tourists with too  many suitcases, someone in work clothes peacefully napping, a jigsaw puzzle diligently being completed, lovers having a Titanic-esque moment on a balcony (fun fact: those balconies are called pickleforks),…

AANHPI Month: Where to Celebrate, Eat, and Learn Around Seattle

AANHPI Month: Where to Celebrate, Eat, and Learn Around Seattle

From festivals and museum exhibits to food tours and historic neighborhoods, here are a few ways to mark the month across the region.

Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month—known as AANHPI Month—is observed in the U.S. each May. It began as a weeklong observance in 1978 and expanded to the full month in 1992. Asian, Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities in the United States extend back much further, including to the late 16th century, when…

Black Panther Park in Skyway Becomes First Black Panther Park in the World

Black Panther Park in Skyway Becomes First Black Panther Park in the World

The new community garden honors the Black Panther Party’s legacy of food justice and the Skyway neighbors who helped bring it to life.

On a sunny Sunday earlier this month, at the corner of 75th Avenue and Renton Avenue South, the community gathered for the opening of Skyway’s Black Panther Park. Inspired by the Black Panther’s Free Breakfast for School Children program that compelled the federal government to provide breakfast in schools, Black Panther Park is a community…

Rearview Mirror: A Family Coming Apart, SIFF, and My First Fashion Show

Things I did, saw, ate, learned, or read in the past week (or so).

The Family House A house can hold a lot, and Seattle Rep’s Appropriate knows that. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Tony-winning play, directed here by Timothy McCuen Piggee, drops the Lafayette siblings into their late father’s hoarded, falling-apart Arkansas plantation home for an estate sale, and lets the whole thing crack open from there. The sibling dynamics are…
